Church Discipline: An Act Of Love

2 Thessalonians 3:7-16

 

  1. What Is Discipline?

 

    1. Created By God To Correct And Train- Heb. 12:6,11
      1. Discipline In The Home- Proverbs 13:24, Proverbs 22:15
      2. Discipline In The Law of Moses- Num. 9:3,10-13, John 9:22
      3. Discipline In The Government- Romans 13:4
      4. Discipline In The Church- 2 Thessalonians 3:6

 

    1. Done Out Of Love- Heb. 12:6
      1. 1 Cor. 5:5; 2 Thess. 3:14-15; Prov. 6:23; Heb. 12:11

 

    1. Teaches Holiness- Heb. 12:10
      1. To recognize of a change of fellowship- 1 John 1:7, Eph 5:11
      2. “Fellowship” – found 14 times in the NT.  Basic idea is sharing, join participation, community, association.  A 2-sided relation.

 

    1. Painful But Produces Righteous Fruit In The Willing- Heb. 12:11
      1. Discipline is a privilege- 2 Tim. 2:22, Rev 3:19
      2. When we make a commitment to join ourselves to a local church it is a commitment to watch out for the other members of the body of Christ and they are watching out for us!

 

  1. Why Must Church Discipline Be Done?
    1. To Obey God (I Cor.5:1-5; Mt. 18:15-18; 2 Thess. 3:6-15)
    2. So Christ’s Name Can Be Disassociated From Sin- 1 Cor 5:1
      1. An Example To The World- (Mt. 5:13-16; II Pet.2:2-9)
    3. To Reach Hearts And Save Souls of Sinners- 1 Cor. 5:5
    4. To Produce Shame & Godly Sorrow- 2 Corinthians 7:8
    5. A Warning The Faithful- 1 Cor 5:2, 1 Tim. 5:20 (Ella and Jackson/crying/Consistency)
    6. To Keep Sin From Spreading- 1 Cor 5:6

 

  1. Who Does The Discipline And Who Is Disciplined?

 

    1. Who Does The Discipline?
      1. Church’s Pleading & Participation Requires Every Member. (Mt 18:17)
      2. Elder’s Responsibility To Shepherd Requires Them. (Mt 18:12)
      3. Evangelist’s Responsibility To Teach Requires Them. (1 Tim 5:19-20)

 

    1. Who Is Disciplined?
      1. Those Among Us Living In Sin and Not Willing To Repent
      2. 1 Cor. 5:1-2, 2 Thes. 3:7,11, 1 Peter 5:2,

 

  1. How Is Discipline Administered?

 

    1. Those who sin against a brother (Mt. 18:15-17)
      1. Step one is to go to the offending brother.
      2. Step two is to take one or two more with you to talk to the offender.
      3. Step three is to “tell it to the church.”
      4. Step four Jesus says “But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a publican.”

b. Open Immorality In The Congregation Not Repented Of- 1 Cor 5:1-13

  1. After efforts are made and this person is unrepentant.
  2. Deliver this person to Satan so he will be saved- v4-5
  3. Cleanse the old leaven for the good of the rest of the church- v6
  4. Jesus is the reason- v7
  5. Our association with them must change- v9-12
  6. They must be purged- v13

c. False Teachers And Divisive Members Who Do Not Repent

  1. After efforts are made and if they are still not willing to repent
  2. Romans 16:17- They must be marked Or
  3. Titus 3:10-11- They must be withdrawn from

 

    1. Elders Living In Sin 
      1. After efforts are made and if they are still not willing to repent
      2. 1 Timothy 5:19- There must be two or three witnesses to accuse
      3. 1 Timothy 5:20- Rebuke in the presence of all so the rest fear

 

    1. Disobedient Members Who Do Not Repent
      1. After efforts have been made and they are not repentant
      2. II Thes. 3:13- Don’t grow weary in doing good
      3. II Thes 3:14- Take note of that person (NASB special note)
      4. II Thes 3:14- Do not keep company with him
        1. Family members still have obligations to one another, but a spiritual distinction must be recognized.
      5. II Thes 3:14- that he might be ashamed (Greek, "made to turn and look into himself, and so be put to shame."
      6. II Thes 3:15- Yet do not count him as an enemy but admonish him as a brother.
