Do Better Things

Do Better Things Today

But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. Hebrews 6:9

We don’t know for sure who wrote Hebrews, but one thing we do know is that the writer wrote things to them they needed to hear. Firm even hard things, yet the writer loved the people he wrote too, and was confident of better things concerning the brethren he wrote to. Having confidence in people encourages them and makes a difference in their performance. This is what God has done for us even before time. He was so confident in our ability and willingness, that He put confidence in us to do good works as God Himself has done. Eph. 2:10- For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. His love for us bred the ultimate confidence in mankind, that manifested itself in God sending His only son to die for us (John 3:16) There are some things in Hebrews 5:9-14, 6:1-8 we all need to aware of today that are things Christians dealt with then, that we should be aware of and commit to not do because we are called to better things…things that accompany salvation.

• Becoming dull of hearing
o 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.… 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
• Failing to be able to teach the first principles
o 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God
• An unclear understanding of what is good and what is evil
o 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
• Never moving on past elementary principles
o 1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection
• Having received the heavenly gift/salvation falling away and bearing no fruit
o 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.7 For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8 but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

We are better than these things…we can be confident of better things concerning ourselves, concerning our salvation! We can do better, we can grow more, we can become a teacher, we can know what is good and evil, and we can mature and learn more than basic principles. Finally, having received the heavenly gift, we can no longer put our Lord to an open shame by sinful living or a lack of teaching. We can become more like Him every day (Gal 2:20). We can bear fruit, be useful to our Lord and receive blessings from Him. Today let’s do better things! The things that accompany our salvation!
